April 5, 2007 - Directed by Stephen Hopkins and produced by Joel Silver, The Reaping follows professional miracle debunker Katherine Winter (Oscar winner Hilary Swank), a former minister who lost her faith when she lost her husband and daughter while doing missionary work in Africa. Now, Katherine puts scientific facts ahead of miracles and religious doctrine.

Katherine's new calling as a university professor has taken her around the world to investigate supposed miracles, but so far she has debunked every one of them. It is precisely because she is the world's foremost debunker of miracles that Doug Blackwell (David Morrissey) has sought her out.

Doug is a schoolteacher in the small Louisiana town of Haven, which is hidden among the swamps. Haven has witnessed a series of bizarre occurrences that the townspeople believe to be sent by God. A child has been killed and the river has turned to blood, which is only the beginning of what appears to be a revisiting of the Biblical 10 plagues upon the otherwise sleepy town.

Katherine and her partner Ben (Idris Elba) arrive in Haven and begin to witness these inexplicable events for themselves. Shockingly, their usual methods are failing them on this case. For the first time in her professional career, Katherine can't explain these phenomena with science.

Katherine discovers that the people of Haven believe mysterious youngster Loren McConnell (AnnaSophia Robb), who they suspect of slaying her brother, has brought God's wrath to their doorstep. The townsfolk see Loren as a harbinger of supernatural doom, but the childless Katherine only sees a little girl in need of help.

Katherine and Ben's investigation ultimately leads towards a conspiracy, but that doesn't stop Katherine from re-examining her lack of faith. That faith may prove to be the only weapon she will have against the evil that threatens Haven.
